Awesome Holiday Cookies to Make With Your Toddler

The holiday's are coming! Bring the holiday spirit into your homes by breaking out the mixer and whipping up a batch of delicious Christmas Sugar Cookies. Don't even think of doing it after the kids are in bed! Let your kids help you make the cookies - they will be so proud! Here is a great kid friendly recipe to try with your toddler. I've included parts that your toddler can help you with to make this activity a great family bonding experience.

Have your toddler help you clear a workspace and spread old newspapers on it. Get a step-stool and have your toddler wash his hands with soap and water very well. This step can take as long or as short as you wish. My toddler can wash her hands for over 20 minutes if I would let her!

Gather all equipment and ingredients that you need before you start. Bring the mixer out to the workspace, the eggs, as well as the cookie sheets. The rest of the items you can hand to your toddler and have them bring it to the table. Toddlers love to help!

You will need:

Measuring cups and spoons

Rolling pin

Parchment paper to place on top of cookie sheet

Cookie Cutters

Mixing Bowl

Spatula

Ingredients:

1 stick unsalted butter or margarine

2 cups flour

2 teaspoons baking soda

1/2 teaspoon of salt

1 cup sugar

1 large egg

2 Tablespoons orange juice

1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract

Instructions:

Pre-heat the oven to 375 degrees. Measure the flour, baking soda and salt. Have your toddler pour it into the bowl and mix with a fork. You always want to guide your toddlers hand when they are pouring the ingredients in to avoid missing the bowl. Set aside.

Ask your toddler put the margarine into the mixing bowl. Measure the sugar and have him pour it in. Cover it and ask your toddler to turn on the mixer (they love this part!) until creamy. Turn off mixer and measure out the orange juice, vanilla and crack the egg. Have your toddler put it in. Your toddler can once again turn on the mixer until it's combined. With help from you, have your toddler pour in the dry mixture and once again mix until combined.

Now the dough needs to be rolled out. Depending on the age of your toddler you can either give him his own piece to roll out or have him 'help you' roll it. A seltzer bottle makes a great rolling pin in a pinch.

Together with your toddler cut out holiday shapes with the cookie cutters, toddlers will find it too hard to do it on their own. Then let your toddler go crazy sprinkling on the colored sugar!

Bake for 10 minutes. Cool and enjoy! Homemade cookies makes a great personal Christmas gift for grandparents and friends.
